London’s second-busiest airport is about to launch the UK’s first robotic airport parking at its South Terminal. The service will start in August.
Drivers arrive at a dedicated drop-off area and wait while robots lift the car by its tires and stores it. Because the operation is external, drivers keep their keys as they take the shuttle to the terminal. The company says that the system will work for 95% of all current models.
On return to the airport, the car is retrieved and ready to be driven away from a dedicated collection area.
Stanley Robotics, the company that developed the system, has also installed it at Lyon Airport in France and at Basel-Mulhouse Airport, shared by France, Switzerland and Germany.
