Off and on, through 15 years of visits, I’ve stopped to look at Barcelona’s Umbrella House, a handsome structure along Las Ramblas that was built for the owner of an umbrella shop that operated in the building.
Each time I look, I see more, and this year’s visit was no exception. The originally simple building from 1858 was redone about 30 years later, at a time when the Catalan Moderniste movement in architecture was starting, and when oriental motifs were all in vogue. A closer look at those were the focus of this year’s attention!
The Umbrella House’s next-door neighbor is worth a look, too. Less focused in its decoration, and perhaps a little more ornate.
