Refugee Ukraine lions find home in Belgium

Two lions who originally lived in Kiev’s zoo have now found a new home at the Nature Aid Center in Oudsbergen, Belgium.

Because of the war, they were moved to temporary quarters, but that placement also was threatened. Biologist Frederik Thoelen of the center said “The animals were in a shelter near Kyiv, which they had to leave because of the war. They initially stayed in a zoo in Poznań, while waiting for a solution.”

To make room for the three-year-old lions, the center had to accelerate construction of new enclosures suitable for them. Their time there may be temporary again; depending on events they might eventually go home or find a permanent home elsewhere.
