Re: August 2 2017: Duck Herding in the Kerala Backwaters

PortMoresby ·
In Bali I watched from my rented house in the rice paddies as ducks were regularly brought to the fields to eat insects and fertilize the crop. Not to say they don't eat them, too, but probably a similar routine in So. India.

Re: The Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

GarryRF ·
It's always good to see the art and beauty of emerging nations. Far from the images that we had in our minds if we remember recent history. My Daughter has travelled extensively in Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand and tells amazing stories of some of the local food. Which completely deters my wife from venturing into this part of the world. When we were in Bali and Singapore she survived on McDonalds ! Give me Fish Head soup and Chicken Porage any day !

For those of you likewise enamored with these beautiful plants, a place to see them in profusion without traveling to Asia is a remarkable garden just outside Santa Barbara, California, called, appropriately, Lotusland. The "official" site isn't loading for some reason so I...

Re: Visiting Santiago de Cuba

PortMoresby ·
Another way we're different, DrF! I've tried extreme cold and will avoid in future at any cost. I have, however learned to cope with heat - a chaise longue on a shady terrace, a good fan, a great book and I can be perfectly happy (see blog on A House in Bali for more information). The key element is to not move, except when absolutely necessary. So, I suppose the key to cold is to keep moving. I prefer the former, but not conducive to touring.
