Re: Canada gets its first non-stop to India
So you’ll probably get the super-new plane…noticed after posting that some of the flights for now are being flown by a 787-8, but starting in February, it will be the -9… Green with envy about everything…except the length of the flight!

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day: Jan. 16, 2014: Liverpool Victoria Gallery
My favourite time to visit attractions is May-June-July. Before the little monsters are released on school vacation. Liverpool has hundreds of things to do - no exaggeration ! Here's 128 to go on with http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/A...seyside_England.html Liverpool makes a good hub for visiting nearby Chester with its 2,000 year old Roman Walls and Tudor Buildings. The River Dee and North Wales. All using local public transport - mostly trains. You can get a flight, Liverpool - Dublin from...

Chester is a Walled City. It has 3 miles of Battlements enclosing the Centre. The Roman Amphitheatre is just outside the City Gates. The seating was wooden. It has no raised sections like other Roman Amphitheatres. You can see the remains of this 2000 year old settlement and walk the circuit on the original walls of Chester. Tudor Buildings

Re: Finishing college. Need help planning trip to U.K,
Starting to get things planned now Hank ! You have the choice of flying into Edinburgh in Scotland. Manchester in the North of England. Or Gatwick / Heathrow which both serve the London area in the South of England. You can get a Train to Paris to end your tour with a few days of Culture in a foreign language ! Fly back to the US from Paris will save you hundreds of Dollars because you wont pay the UK "Departure Tax" but not vital ! Liverpool is less than an hour on the Train from...

Re: Where in the World is Gumbo? #36
Looks a bit like a Tudor cottage stuck on top of an obelisk. Let me start the guessing with the idea that despite the decor, it's not all that old (since when Tudor-era builders used those wooden crosspieces they were structural, not decorative.) But if I'm right about when, it completely unmoors this from the idea of 15th-century England, and it could be absolutely anywhere!

My thoughts Car # 1 1967-68 Dodge Charger with a 426 Hemi. Not necessarily aftermarket - you could get it as an option. The high rise and the blower were added. They came with dual quads. Car # 2 Most likely 1969 Camaro Super Sport (SS) Coupe. 396 engine. What's special about these beauts ? > They are worth a lot of money these days $ 30 K - $ 40 K.

Thanks for the welcome! As for the A380, well, it was a comfortable enough seat...but sharing the baggage carousel with 600 passengers meant it took us an hour waiting after the first bags started down the belt...I think the sheer scale of loading and unloading adds to my doubts about the future of super-jumbos...

Re: "Cruise Night", Thunder Bay, Ontario: The 1960's (Part 1)
Hi GarryRF I totally agree with your comment. Pink would not have been the color I would have chosen for the Mustang, but it still was a beauty to gaze at and admire. On a side note, I had to laugh out loud when I read the license plate on the "Barracuda" which essentially reads "You are fish bait". Yes, viewing these amazing cars is great fun. I hope you enjoy my last two blogs on "Cruise Night" which I believe are to be posted on September 2 (Cars from the 1960's Part 2) and September 9...

Hi GarryRF! I do hope that by the time Hurricane Cristobal reaches the UK it will be nothing more than a weak tropical storm. Here's hoping Cristobal misses you altogether and that the only thing that should "blow you away" on September 2 is my "Cruise Night" blog (ya ya I know...really bad joke, right?). Take care of yourself and stay safe. Let us know how you weather this looming storm.

Re: A stroll through the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, Vail
Does winter arrive early in these gardens ? Is that due to the elevation? Does it remain cool in the Summer too ? I'm thinking of the likes of Mexico City where it should be tropical but its elevation keeps it cool all year. Lovely photos of the Flora and Gardens. Was it really that empty ?

Re: A stroll through the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, Vail
Thanks for the comments, Garry. Yes, winter arrives early because of the very high altitude. Over a mile and a half above sea level. Summers are very nice -- warm (75-80F) dry pleasant days (no humidity to speak off), and it always cools down nicely at night, so most places don't even have air conditioning. It really was that empty. No more than 6 folks in the garden including my wife and I, and of course not counting the hundreds of birds flying about.

You are correct, GarryRF. There have been a number of movies filmed in the park. Lifted straight from Wikipedia , here is a listing of these: Film History : Valley of Fire is a popular location for shooting automobile commercials and other commercial photography. It has provided a setting for the following films and television shows: The Professionals with Burt Lancaster , Lee Marvin , and Claudia Cardinale was filmed in 1966. As of November 2012 a piece of the movie set is still up for...

Re: Airports, Airlines battle over passenger fees
The other fees that especially bother me are the ones you never see in tickets, because they come out the back door. Compare airport car rental prices with off-airport of the same brand; compare the price of gum or candy at the airport or a neighborhood store. That’s airport revenue, too, either through a direct charge (car) or super-high-rents (newsstand)

Re: Air and cruise lines: Out of parking space?
Ah, the problems of sample illustration! The stock photo used doesn’t necessarily reflect the situation in all ports. In some, capacity is limited because space that doesn’t block channels is limited; in some others shore facilities are limited. These issues are especially severe for the super-sized 5-and 6-thousand passenger ships.

Re: How do you buy your travel?
Few more thoughts, following HistoryDigger and DrFumblefinger... 1. Definitely check all your affiliations on car rental; after years of getting better price through AAA than any other way I knew, I recently found that going to the same vendors through USAA (my car insurance) gets me even better. 2. Not only does Priceline have good pricing on cars, I've often found I can get 30-40% lower through their blind-bidding (Name Your Own Price) service. 3. RailEurope is something of a red flag for...

Re: Classic American Cars #1
Too easy... 1953 Chevrolet sedan. It appears to have Bel Air trim, but it's been altered. The three chrome 'teeth' have been removed from the front grille, the stainless trim around the windshield is gone and the 'Bel Air' script is missing from the rear door - plus, there are several other small changes.

Re: Classic American Cars #2
It's a 1958 Oldsmobile - probably a Super 88 sedan. Like the '53 Chevy, it's missing some trim that would positively identify the model. BTW - here's a web site that you folks should enjoy... brochures of hundreds of American cars: http://www.lov2xlr8.no/broch1.html

I was hoping that someone else would jump in with an ID, but I guess that's not going to happen. This one is a 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air sedan. When I first saw it, I thought it might be the other side of Car #1, as the '53 and '54 have the same body and it's easy to interchange trim. After taking a closer look, though, it is a different car (outside mirrors were the key...). As with the first two cars, all the 'letter' script appears to have been removed from this one - kinda strange, in my ...

Re: Road Trip: The Movies and the Cars
Speaking of classic old cars... I've wanted a 1931 Model A sedan since I was 14 years old. So a few years ago the search began with the help of the president of the local Model A club. Using this guy's expertise plus online searching and suggestions from a financial guy I made a purchase in 2011. However, it was not a 1931 Model A sedan. This whole undertaking reminded me of the old axiom, "A camel is really a horse designed by a committee." While looking for the Model A I was talking my a...

Re: Sudeley Castle, witness to England's turbulent past
Having stayed in Winchcombe several times, twice as I finished and then began sections of the Cotswold Way, I find it's a perfect town for me, big enough and small enough for those of us who like cities less. It appears there have been some upgrades to Sudeley Castle since I was there last. Re: As if you didn't know: NY Gov calls NYC airports terrible
Well, fortunately LGA hosts no international flights except to and from Canada, and hey, they're family, right? No need to do heavy cleaning. Seriously, though: It's actually my favorite of all the NY airports. It's compact, I can park easily across the road from the main terminal and the luggage comes faster than at either JFK or EWR. It's even got a Todd English restaurant and a few other amenities. It doesn't dwarf me or make me feel lost in future space. To me, it's like a pleasant...
