Sure PortMoresby, the two cameras I use are a Pentax K10D dSLR with a Pentax DA 55-300 mm f4-5.8 lens and the other is a Panasonic Lumix TS2. The Lumix takes macro pictures like nothing else I have used, I am learning to get better at taking macro with my K10D but am still not as good yet as I am with the Lumix. DrF, the honey bee (the one with no hair) was taken in the lovely flower gardens at Lake Louise, Alberta and the bumble bees were taken on a trip to the Bowden Corn and Sunflower...

22 April 2014. A British woman has been arrested and is facing deportation in Sri Lanka over a Buddha tattoo on her arm. Naomi Michelle Coleman, 37, was taken into custody at the airport in Colombo, after she arrived from India. Ms Coleman, who has a tattoo of a Buddha seated on a lotus flower on her right arm, was arrested for ‘hurting others' religious feelings,’ a police spokesman said. Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, January 15th, 2015: Winter Flowers ?

DrFumblefinger ·
It's a beautiful flower, Garry, and wish that they were blooming out there now. I'm looking at a foot of snow on the ground as I write this. Last year in Calgary was one of the longest and coldest winters on record. This winter is somewhat milder, but still with enough cold days. What does this mean when added to what you describe? I have no idea. My own view is that we've only been studying the planet's weather for about a century with some detail now. That, in the scope of the history of...

I bought a Poppy in September this year from a Vietnam Vet in Easton MD. I commented on his cap with the dates on - and he removed his jacket to show me his T-shirt with his Division and Da Nang and a host of other cities where he fought. Had some amazing stories to tell. There should have been a crowd watching him, but just me. In 2015 a total of 888,246 hand made ceramic Poppy's were placed at Tower Bridge London to remember the number of men who fell in battle 1914 - 1918. The Poppy was...

Re: Where in the World is TravelGumbo (#112)

PortMoresby ·
The plant in question is a yucca, I believe, and grows, as DrF says, all over the SW US, including the Sonora Desert that extends into Northern Mexico. But the one in the background of the flower is, if I'm not mistaken, a Joshua Tree and that may narrow down the location, maybe in the Mojave Desert. Or maybe not. Having lived for decades in the Sonora Desert near Mexico, brush fires are uncommon so maybe that fact alone, mentioned by The Puzzler, will help pin it down.

The horses (probably only some 10 plus a donkey) and some 50 cattle are allowed to roam and graze totally free (restrained only by cattle grids on the surrounding roads) for around 8 months of the year. Theoretically only animal owners with ancient "Commoners Rights" linked to ownership of old properties in the immediate vicinity of the Common are permitted to release their animals to graze free in this way. The present purpose of the animals roaming in this way is supposed to be keeping...

I'd like to comment on design as it applies to the Pic of the Day thumbnail that appears on the homepage. I've been trying to choose pictures for this feature that look attractive in the small scale we first see, that will invite viewers to click on it to see it full-sized, along with whatever else we post. I think this one is a great example of what looks good in such a small size, clear design elements, in this case the central flower bed with a linear frame of pavement, trees and...
