Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Nov 17, 2015: Mdina Gates, Malta

PortMoresby ·
Mdina is one of the few places I've been that's, in my experience, unlike any other. I thought it so beautiful on my first visit that I booked a room in the closest hotel just outside this gate and spent several days exploring it and the adjacent town of Rabat. Lunch at the restaurant of, I believe, the only hotel in Mdina, the Xara Palace , was memorable, wonderful service and food and a small compensation for not staying in the 5 star hotel. Thanks for the memory, IslandMan.

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day: Haddon Hall, Derbyshire, England

PortMoresby ·
As you may know, DrF, a number of houses in the UK are known as much or more for their gardens as for the houses. Not so in this case, although what they have sets the house off perfectly. The rest is more natural landscape as you can see in the bottom picture. I love the fact that the house is the star, as it should be in this case, and the gardens are a compliment.

Re: Why You should visit Nevada's Valley of Fire

DrFumblefinger ·
You are correct, GarryRF. There have been a number of movies filmed in the park. Lifted straight from Wikipedia , here is a listing of these: Film History : Valley of Fire is a popular location for shooting automobile commercials and other commercial photography. It has provided a setting for the following films and television shows: The Professionals with Burt Lancaster , Lee Marvin , and Claudia Cardinale was filmed in 1966. As of November 2012 a piece of the movie set is still up for...

Re: Experience with hotel bidding sites?

DrFumblefinger ·
Hotwire.com has a generic "star rating" hotel, unknown to you as to which brand and exact location, at discounted prices. I've use them a few times and been satisfied with the results. For example, I got 4 star rooms in downtown Montreal for less than eighty dollars a night, probably a quarter or less of their rack rate. Generally I do like to know where I'm staying, but good luck. Let us know how this works out for you.

Re: Where in the World is TravelGumbo? (#74)

Roderick Simpson ·
The spelling of "Harbor" indicates the US, and the angle of the sun suggests the southern half. I suspect if it were California, there are Travel Gumbo bloggers who would have recognised it by now. There is a flag with a single star - could this be an old version of the flag of Texas? So what about the Texas coast somewhere?

Re: Philly's "Rocky Steps" Endangered?

Travel Rob ·
What's amazing to me, more than Rocky, was how it came about. Sylvester Stallone turned down big money for his script because Hollywood wanted it without him being Rocky. And he was broke at the time. He stuck to his guns and eventually got to star in Rocky, becoming a huge movie star. Incredible that he had that much confidence in himself. http://www.philly.com/philly/b...-could-be-Rocky.html

If you can stay for two lunches, make the next one Restaurant Stephane Derbord on Avenue President Wilson. Take the "surprise" lunch deal; it's 28€ for a 3-course lunch with a Michelin star and the friendliest husband/wife team you could imagine. The menu changes, based on the day's special (tied to the market!) and was heavenly.
