One thing foreign travel shows us is how much the USA has to offer too. I get as much of a thrill being welcomed back home as I do going on my trip.

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, July 15, 2014: Deck Chairs Aboard QM2
Your photo reminds me of a cruise we just did a few months ago in the Chilean fjordland. When we approached cape Horn, famous for its stormy seas, we were in constant winds of 100 knots, with gusts of 160 knots. The deck was even emptier than your photo above would indicate! Nice photos, Islandman. Thanks for taking all of us aboard the Queen Mary.

Gumbo's Pic of the Day, March 26, 2015: Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range 2-8-8-4 "Yellowstone" #229, Two Harbors, Minnesota
This behemoth locomotive is the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range (DM&IR) 2-8-8-4 "Yellowstone" which is now preserved at Two Harbors, Minnesota. Eighteen of these powerful coal burning locomotives were built between 1941 and 1943. The 2-8-8-4s were retired between 1958 and 1963 as diesel locomotives took over. Sadly, only three of the 2-8-8-4s still survive...Number 229 pictured above, Number 227 at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, Minnesota, and Number...

Outside a restaurant in Acton, MA, we spotted this shiny Ford coupe. It actually may not really be a 1946, but if not, it's a '47 or '48. Subject to correction by someone who knows more, here's the theory. Ford introduced basically this model...

Solar plane to resume its round-the-world trip
Solar Impulse 2, a sun-powered plane that has completed half of its intended round-the-world trip without a drop of fuel, is almost ready to tackle the second half of the trip. The Swiss-built plane which uses solar energy to fill its batteries and power the engine, has been grounded in Hawaii by battery damage suffered during a 5-day flight from Japan to Hawaii. Yes, it doesn't fly very fast! Project staff say that they've raised enough money for the repairs, and can be in the air again by...

The engineering skills that produced these mammoths must have been colossal. I can get lost for hours looking at one of these works of art. My wife never gets the sense of history that goes with these living monuments to our past. So I take bundles of photos - "Move along - nothing to see here" "yes my dear"

I know just what you mean Ottoman ! How can an intelligent person look at huge model train layout and just say : "Ok - what does it do ?" Like casting pearls before swine ! Like getting your 15 seconds viewing the Mona Lisa and just taking photos. Like watching the Space Station pass across the sky like a huge sparkling jewel. "Yes - I know it's the same every time - but it's an amazing piece of..... doesn't matter.."
