Any idea how long the island is going to be closed? I'd hope to visit Lanai in about 2 years. Must be nice to buy your own Hawaiian Island -- and interesting to see if this "green" scheme will work. Lanai has limited resources, except for lots of sunshine a great weather.

My wife and I took a fantastic road trip down the banks of the Danube from Germany to Vienna. We stopped and toured Stift Gottweig (photo attached) which was a terrific find as you have described. Likewise our weather that day was blustery and chilly during our Thanksgiving holiday back in the mid-1990's. The nearby town of Krems was also a nice stop (photo of the Krems Steiner Tor (stone city gate)) is also attached. Enjoyed your travel description that rekindles the memories of that road trip.

Well, for a start, make sure you visit Reno, Travel Luver. It's a much small town than Vegas but still has all the casinos, restaurants, etc that you'd expect from a Nevada City. From here it's easy to do a day trip to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, or down to Carson City. Reno is actually the closest major city to Great Basin National Park, say about a 3-4 hour drive. Vegas is 6-7 hour drive away. Salt Lake City is closer to Great Basin than Vegas. Well, I kinda thought it looked Florida, too. I don't see any mountains in there, just sorta low hills, I guess. If they got any real mountains in Florida, Disney built em. That's a fun question! Living in SoCal, there's lots of great places to getaway to. But there are 2 I really like. In the winter I like Palm Springs. Great weather, wildflowers, the mountains and desert. It's great! In the summer I like to go to Big Bear in the mountains. Beautiful mountain scenery. Great trees and lots of cabins. Both places are great!

I've traveled independently in Morocco a number of times now, it became my favorite destination from the first trip 15 years ago. You've made a good choice. Thanks for the comments, Garry. I was in Dingle in October, but we had nice weather. And it was unusually sunny, which was appreciated and made for more interesting photography. Snow is rare in southwestern Ireland because of the warming effect of the Gulf Stream. So while it rarely gets really warm, it rarely gets really cold. One camera? Who travels with only one camera Garry? I thought you've have learned to travel with twins by now!

Personally, I do not think it is worth the time and effort it would take for you to drive to Duluth from Minneapolis for only one day in the winter time. The ride from Minneapolis to Duluth one way on Interstate 35 will take you 2.5 hours, and that's under good driving conditions. That's an interesting tripod, TravelandNature, but you won't catch me on anything that potentially could launch me as a projectile at 60 mph. And, unless you're very macho, you'll not enjoy yourself in bad weather. So if you want to walk on the wild side, rent a convertible, or buy an older one, drive it for a month and sell it in Seattle (not exactly a city for convertibles, except on rare days). Regarding on where to go and how to plan the trip, I'd make a point of going by my local AAA...

Thank you for the great photos! I've taken the Interstate many times and it is indeed very scenic.The weather can change rapidly so your precautions people should take note of. Also make sure your car is in tip top shape. The Rockies are a tough climb and I've personally had a transmission go out on me on the journey.

Hi Tom. I live in the UK. We're not lovers of cold weather, but we did have a night 10 months ago when it fell below freezing for a few hours. Some say "Global Warming" but I say the Jet Stream got stuck in its usual "Summer" position and Caribbean winds kept us warm. We don't have a mosquito problem here ( 200 miles north of London) but I'm curious to know. Are there any noticeable changes to your weather ? Longer summers or wetter winters ? I remember studying the shifting Polar Ice Caps...

I don't know much about global warming. I suspect that pollution contributes to it, but these things also happen on their own as we know from ice ages and warming periods in the past. I have noticed long periods of warm weather but then it gets cold again. I have read that the Arctic ice is melting but this coming winter is predicted to be very cold here in Canada. I do not believe that the burning of fossils fuels has any effect on the direction of the Jet Stream. Which in turn controls the weather around the world. I do believe that the Petro-Chemical Refineries from the New Jersey coast and further south releasing tons of nasty unwanted chemicals into the atmosphere does have a big effect on the de-forestation of Europe with acid rain. While I certainly agree with you about the refineries (remember how close to some of them I live) the jetstream is hardly the only factor involved in weather and climate. The Jet Stream is responsible for the California drought. The Polar Vortex you've been suffering from - and for the UK not having frosty weather since last November. English strawberries in Winter and de-icing salt being 15cents for a 10 kilo sack ! Its not yet April and I've cut the grass twice ! Blame it all on the Jet Stream.

Great photos Dr Y. Is this an all year tourist resort or would I freeze to death in winter ? I presume this remains sub zero all year due to its elevation. Does it contain any wildlife ? Is it receding with warmer weather ? We see pictures of areas where glacier ice is disappearing but there are areas we don't see where it's on the increase. I remember being taught about shifting ice regions in the 1950's and all this alarmist talk today seems to be just a continuation of normality.

The Olympic Tower in Montreal was built, among other reasons to house an observation deck (which it still has) and the mechanism for a retractable roof to the stadium next door. This was because the stadium was home to the Montreal Expos and weather in Montreal in April can be a little chilly. Unfortunately the retractable roof never worked (I think it was tried once and jammed) and they had to convert it to a closed dome.
