Re: France catches 4.5 MILLION foreign speeders on camera

Mac ·
These fixed cameras are signposted and on maps so you have to be pretty unfortunate (or silly) to get 'done' by them. Far worse are their sneaky cameras that are hidden in roadside trash bins, under hedges and all sorts of camouflage. These are normally in villages where it makes real sense to slow right down.

In the end, I've gone with a camera that is bigger than I hoped (but I wasn't going to get all my wishes in a compact...I knew that). I've gotten a Sony HX300, with more zoom than I imagine I'll need (50x), 20Mp and Zeiss lenses. It's one of those "bridge" cameras; looks like a DSLR but lens doesn't change and viewfinder is not optical, but electronic. In fact, it's a miniature of the LCD, viewed through an eyepiece...but that's fine when the sun is too bright. AND, the LCD pulls away from...

Travelling as light as you do it would be an awful burden Rob. I found a lovely bargain today. A Samsung ST 72 camera. It has wifi to view the pix on my TV and its so tiny that I could tuck it into my sock. $50 US and brand new ! Its been in the stores for over a year. So its reduced ! Getting to be a collector I'm afraid ! Sounds just like your "Cup of Tea" though Rob

A few dealers are selling it even cheaper, but the guy who was selling for $319 was doing that by taking out the included battery and AC connector and selling them separately. When I heard that I didn't even ask the total...don't do business that way.

Three-year later follow-up on my original camera-quest. Still happy with the Sony despite its size, but never made a complete switchover: there are just some times when you have to have something that's pocket size. So, sometimes that's my Samsung S7 phone, but especially on the road, it's a camera that fit ALL of my original specs. It's the Panasonic Lumix ZS-50 (TZ50 outside the US). Eye-viewfinder (electronic), built-in WiFi to link to phones, 30x optical zoom and the Leica lenses. I've...

I use the Lumix as my "on the hip at all times" camera as well. Pretty pleased with it. A still use my Canon SLR when lighting and convenience make it feasible to.

Might this camera work? It doesn't have as much zoom as you're used to but has other useful features. Try the link.

Great Tips! I've been on the road a lot the last few years and for me lack of internet has wasted a great deal of time and money. In the countries I am able to , a data plan for internet, will become a must for me. A phone plan like Project Fi from Google allows you to buy data at a reasonable cost and make your phone a portable hot spot. And for countries like Japan, where you have to buy pain relievers at the pharmacy, Advil and or Tylenol brought in your carryon can save you a night of...

Thanks, Marilyn! I bought the Rainsleeve when I first saw your recommendation, and I've already had a chance to use it...no more stashing the cameras and missing pictures just for a drizzle! I've got a favorite carry-along to add, too. I used to carry outlet strips to make sure all our stuff could charge; I switched to a pair of cube taps that plug into an adapter for wherever we are, and turn every outlet into three. Amazon has them for about $3.50, but I found them in a local hardware for...

Rob...good point on the meds (I always have a vey small bottle filled with Advil, Ibuprofen and Immodium, even at home). But another medication thought: Take careful notes of what you take at home, and shop for it while you're away. You could be surprised. The Voltaren gel that has a $40 co-pay in my drug plan sells in Europe for about €7 over the counter. But be sure that it's exactly the formula and dosage that's been prescribed.

If you travel outside the US remember to keep prescribed and store bought drugs in their original packaging for those Customs searches - just in case. But most basic stuff can be had in supermarkets for under a dollar. Aspirin - Paracetamol - Ibuprofen - Gel and tablets. Immodium . Vitamins and Omega 3.
