Re: Is trip cancellation insurance really worth it?

Former Member ·
My elderly mother bought it when she went on a cruise. For her, it made sense because her health is not so good. She might have had to cancel and did not want to lose her deposit. The policy that she bought was specifically for trip cancellation but did not cover health issues or other unexpected issues during the trip. That policy would have covered a deposit refund but not all of them do. There are lots of different types of trip insurance so one has to ask lots of questions. As it turns...

Re: IRS gains power to get passports cancelled

DrFumblefinger ·
That is too much authority to give this agency, which already has fear-invoking rights of property seizure. I don't see what a revenue collection agency has to do with a citizen's right to have a passport. Maybe the person owing taxes needs to conduct business overseas to pay the Treasury what it says it is owed? How could they do this if they can't travel?

I don't like it either. The IRS has made mistakes before and I'm sure taxes and penalties add up quick if the person doesn't pay in time Plus people from certain states might need their passports to act as ID because they won't be able to get into federal facilities with their state drivers license only and might not be able to fly soon . http://www.latimes.com/nation/...-20160103-story.html

There are so many business men into Tax Avoidance schemes that the Government cant watch them all. So I suppose a warning off Uncle Sam saying - " Hey - I'm serious - behave or I'll ground you" could stop their lavish life styles. If everyone paid their Tax due notice then we wouldn't have all the cutbacks on services.

I just heard that all the "shutting down" of the city is estimated to have cost NYC some $200,000,000. And in the end less than a foot of snow fell, not insignificant, but far from the storm of the century. PHeymont, you're on the ground in the New York area, what was it like?

Re: STORM WATCH: CHECK BEFORE YOU GO

Paul Heymont ·
Estimates of the cost of shutting down for a storm come from the same fiction factory as th estimates of how much money a city will make by spending $100 million tax dollars on a new stadium... That said, had the track of the storm been only very slightly east of where it went—and there was no way to know it would shift—we would have had 2-3 feet, and the risk of many people stranded on roads. At times in the past, also, when equipment was not properly positioned off line, it took much too...

Re: Fear of Flying: Does it Make Sense?

George G. ·
In my younger days, I always enjoyed flying and even strong turbulence never bothered me, but my fear of flying developed over time for a number of scary instances. Taking off in a jet from a Caribbean island, one of the engines failed and we ran off the runway into a field nearly ditching in the ocean. The plane was brought back, maintenance worked on it and after reboarding the captain said he was going to give it another try. Then on a military 12 passenger fixed wing plane, we...

I don't know about pilots refusing, but there are a few airports here and there where only pilots with special training are allowed to land or take off, places with narrow margins of ocean and mountain or special wind conditions. My general thought is that I'd just as soon go somewhere else... I'm not really afraid of flying—just skeptical. For all the times I've flown, there is always that moment, heading down the runway, when I'm sure that this huge thing simply cannot get off the ground,...

Wow George, that sounds like a LOT. I can see why it can create anxiety and fear. So many scary instances. So crazy, but like you said, when you're military, you have to get on those planes. I've had a few scary instances myself but nothing like any of that. We did miss a landing strip once in Ontario, CA due to crazy high winds. Had to pull up and try 3 times before we landed. Wasn't real scary, just weird and wondering what would happen if we skidded off and hit a building, etc. It's...
