I've been to the Gorge many times. I think it's one of the most scenic drives in the US, and has great hiking. But I've never seen it quite like today. Thanks for the cool pic!

Re: Gal Vihara, Sri Lanka

George G. ·
You mentioned Gal Vihara was commissioned by King Parakramabahu I (1153 - 1186 A.D), who also built Polonnaruwa's Great Palace Complex and the Vatadage (where the sacred Buddha Tooth Relic was kept). Is there a record of the names of the master stone carvers or the one who actually built / architect the Great Palace Complex?

Re: Gal Vihara, Sri Lanka

DrFumblefinger ·
Something I've also thought about, George. And no, the credit goes to the big boss and not the people who actually do the work. So far as I know none of these crafts men -- and there must have been dozens on this project -- are known anymore.

An interesting post, Lester. Thanks for sharing all this information. I've always been puzzled by the concept of Gross National Happiness. How could this be measured? Happiness and enjoyment of life are very important, but it sounds like a government propaganda line to make poor people feel good about their life's circumstances.

On the edge of a reflecting pool hundreds of other visitors jockey for position to get the best photo of the sun rising over the temple. Angkor Wat was built in the first half of the 12 th century. Thanks for your comment. It is not a well-known site - even our friend Eranda had never been there (and, as I said, nor had our driver). A visit here can be combined with a safari in Udawalawe or Lunugamwehera. We spent four days in the area and explored all three places as well as a couple of other interesting sights. Below is one of my favourite shots from inside Udawalawe N.P.:
