Re: Prague's Jerusalem Synagogue: Where Gumbo Was (#129)

Paul Heymont ·
My apologies to the three Guessers who correctly identified Where Gumbo Was...when I wrote the blog, the guesses were not in yet. When I updated it with the congratulatory paragraph, I apparently failed to save it, and the older version went "live" this morning. Again, my apologies to Jonathan L, TravelingCanuck and PortMoresby, all regular (and often successful) participants. .....PHeymont

I visited Prague in Feb. a few years ago and had a wonderful time. Even in the cold middle of winter there was a vibrant outdoor life. A great place any time.

Lovely pictures. I appreciate knowing the details too. My family and I spent a week in Prague and and enjoyed every slow day. We rented an Old Town apartment through VRBO and were happy with the quiet, rooftop location three minutes to the square but quieted enough not to feel pressed by tourists. Lobokicz Palace museum was a highlight for us all. http://www.lobkowicz.cz/en/

A wonderful piece! I'm always struck by the contrast of Prague now vs when I spent time there in the late 1980's.

Wandering in Prague

Prague draws a lot of visitors these days, drawn by its picturesque historic center, its cultural elan, its beautiful river setting, its long and varied history...and maybe also just because everyone else is going. We went there a few years ago (2003,...

You've made my New Year's resolution for me: to stop waiting and go visit! The story is as fascinating as the building. My father's family lived nearby in the 1910s, though I have no idea if they actually went there, and I used to pass by in the mid-1960s, with never a thought to what the interior might be. Can I like the blog twice?

Great to see that part of NYC education involved learning about other religions. A couple years ago, one of our Virginia counties in a strict bible belt area had a parental uprising that stifled a similar program when the school tried to familiarize students about non Christian religions.

In a city with some of the oldest synagogues in Europe, we wandered into one of the newest, just over a century old. It’s not far from Prague’s main rail station.
