Thank you for your comments PortMoresby and GarryRF!. Yes, we got quite close to the animals Garry, although you definitely need to have a telephoto lens and best to have a camera with a quick shutter speed. I used my digital SLR on these and shot photos in bursts of 5-6, picking out the one I like best. You need to be very careful about where you eat in Africa, maybe more so than in most places. But we traveled with a quality safari outfit (And Beyond), which not only prepared great meals,...

A colorful and very captivating travel story. Everything from land formations, cuisine, architecture, and wildlife. It wasn't lost on me while engaged in your story on the remoteness of your explorations. Disaster could have befallen you anywhere and no cell towers, but you explained how you were well prepared and took great precautions. Very well written and photographed. Did you have many photos of the local people and their native architecture after colonialism?

Thank you very much for your comment, George. There certainly were times - after we had not encountered another vehicle or a building for ages - when our thoughts turned to what might happen if our car suddenly broke down. We found the local people very cheerful and most helpful. With older people the conversations inevitably turned to the bad old days of apartheid. Some of the stories were very disturbing indeed. As to modern buildings, we did not find much beyond the usual 'shopping mall'...

Fantastic bird photography Professor and those crocodiles look like they aren't missing any meals lately. If I compute correctly, 1000 rupees is equivalent to $6.43 or 4.66 British pounds. Seems the Sri Lanka currency has weakened quite a bit since 2014, so maybe a good time to get a value vacation there.

Sorry about the delay in responding - I have been on an Indian train for what seems like eternity! Yes, George, Sri Lanka is a good-value destination and it is changing fast. So now is a good time to go. As to Udawalawe vs. Yala, we prefer the former. Yala seems to be the one which everyone knows about, but we were a bit disappointed when we went (admittedly a long time ago).

It was a special trip. You likely recognize the Oscar in one of the photos, digging in. Miss you and the gang in Spokane as well, but life in Calgary is nice and the nearby Rockies incredible!

I would not want to approach a bull elephant in my car, but having done several safaris, the animals all but ignore you in the Range Rover vehicles. Apparently they only see a box on wheels. They do not have the ability to discriminate what's inside the box. But if you step out of the vehicle onto the ground, they will become aware of you and you now are on today's menu. The best travel experiences of my life were the days I've been on safari. It's not cheap, but is most memorable. So...
