Where in the World is Gumbo? #8.5

DSCN1264

Gumbo pauses occasionally to visit a church, and was charmed by this one, less grand than most of the most-visited.

As usual, no prize but praise to the first to guess where this one is and name it. In addition to that honor, the winner and all who come will be presented with a fuller portfolio of pictures on Tuesday, when the answer will be published.

As usual, place your guesses as comments below, and carefully scan other comments for help--most solutions come from collaboration! If you're not a member yet, please join so you'll be able to comment: No charge, lots of fun. Click HERE to sign up!

What a beautiful church Gumbo has found!

WITW?

The clues:

18th century Spanish colonial architecture, typical of Franciscan missions;

Banner in English;

Materials are not typical of Florida or Texas missions;

Various effigies of animals and unreal creatures, often incorporated by the Franciscans into their liturgy in order to convert American Indians. Typical of US southwestern states;

Not one of the remaining California missions;

Not in Santa Fe;

Checked missions in Arizona.

Found (as did Gumbo) "the White Dove of the Desert", Mission San Xavier del Bac, 10 miles south of Tucson. It has also been called "the Sistine Chapel of the New World"

More information here.

A great video of the magnificent restored church here.

Thank you PHeymont, for this wonderful discovery. I will check it out in person the next time I am in southern Arizona.
