Taipei's famous National Palace Museum, which draws more than five million visitors each year, opened a branch museum in the southern city of Chiayi.

The new museum took 15 years to complete due to flooding and disagreements with the venue's original architect. It's 9,000 square meters and hopes to attract 1.5 million visitors it's first year. Famous exhibits from the Taipei museum will be moved to Chiayi for the first months, such as the "jadeite cabbage sculpture with insects" which is seen as a symbol of fertility. Permanent exhibitions include Buddhist artifacts, textiles and tea culture displays.
