Most people who visit Key West stop by the giant buoy that marks the southern most point in the continental United States, at the corner of Whitehead and South Street. Situated close to the buoy is a bronze statue of a man blowing a conch shell. I'd never heard of this piece of art before so I decided to do a little research to learn more about the man it honored.
The statue is of Bishop Albert Kee and was crafted by Tom Joris. Bishop Kee was beloved by the people of Key West, standing along the waterfront selling fish, blowing a conch shell and waving at or chatting with passing tourists by the southern most buoy, as his father had before him.
Bishop Kee was a Pastor, businessman, family man and a Key West landmark. I wish I'd met the man.
This statue was erected in 2015.
