Qatar, which is anxious to build up its tourism industry, has turned to an unlikely niche for a pitch: skiiers and snowboarders. The desert kingdom has no outdoor ice or snow, but plenty of sand to substitute.
Qatar and its capital Doha receive millions of travelers each year, but relatively few are visitors; most change planes at the airport and head further out. But the country has a goal of developing those numbers to many millions.
Aside from skiing or snowboarding on the dunes of the so-called Inland Sea, Qatar also offers desert safaris, camel caravans and quad-bike riding on the dunes.
