Portugal's second city, Porto, has come up with a way to beef up its public transport system and to push some relief into its distressed tourism economy by using idled tour buses to carry local commuters.
Starting this month, and using about €750,000 granted by the central government, the city will send tour buses onto city routes to beef up rush hour service and avoid crowding of existing city buses during the pandemic.
The city had already upped service on its systems since September, paying out of municipal funds. Lisbon also received a grant of €750,000.
