Children of the Amazon

One of my most memorable moments in the Peruvian Amazon was when we came across this dug-out canoe, paddled by with three young children. We were traveling by motor boat and were far up a tributary to the Amazon, in virgin rain-forest, when we spotted them.

The kids were as naked as they day they were born, wet and shiny like otters from a recent dip in the river, and were very shy. Turns out we were the first white people they'd ever seen. Our guide offered them some candies and that drew them to the side of our boat, where they conversed in Spanish with our guide for a moment. My Spanish is rudimentary, at best.

I wish I'd taken more photos of the kids, but since they were nude I thought it not appropriate at the time.
