Norway driver's license: An app for that!

Norway has taken a step beyond IDs with chips and holograms and other digital-age features with the introduction of a driving license that is stored on your phone rather than your wallet.

The head of Norway's Public Roads Administration told the broadcaster NRK that “We have found that you can occasionally be unfortunate enough to get a 500 kroner fine because you left your driving licence at home, and there’s no real need for that in the modern age in which we live.”

The app is not a complete replacement; it's good for all purposes in Norway, but won't get you out of a traffic stop elsewhere in Scandinavia or other parts of Europe; so far there's no agreement for a Europe-wide implementation. And for those who aren't sure they're ready to let go of their paper licenses, Norwegian cops will still accept those, too.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
