Munich's sad choice: No Oktoberfest

The German city of Munich has canceled its biggest public event of the year, Oktoberfest, an early fall tradition of crowds, beer tents and tons of sausages that brings the city over a billion Euros each year.

The decision, announced by the Lord Mayor and the State President of Bavaria was made in fear that the festival's 6 million visitors over two weeks in September and early October would provide a breeding ground for a new wave of coronavirus cases.

The officials posted a statement on the festival website: "It hurts, it's such a pity. We have agreed that the risk is simply too high." The Lord Mayor added that "I hope that in 2021, no, I'm sure that we will see another Oktoberfest in 2021 – hopefully under different conditions by then. Until then, I must beg your indulgence that there was no other solution."

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
