The Mercado Central (Central Market) is one of the older structures in San José, built in 1880. It's a big market, spreading over an entire city block.
Like in many countries, Costa Ricans do most of their shopping now in supermarkets and not in markets of this type. But the Central Market is worth visiting as it shows an interesting slice of history and local life. Thousands of people visit the market every day, including many locals getting a snack or buying that specific item they need.
Within the narrow halls of the market you'll find over two hundred stands that sell all type of goods. These include many small restaurants (known as "sodas"), coffee stands, produce, meat, and fish vendors, flowers, clothes, souvenirs -- all types of stuff.
Here are some of the things we saw on our visit to the market.
(Seafood selection looked very good)
(These socks are used to brew coffee. Add a heaped tablespoon of coffee to the sock, then pour hot water through)
