Las Vegas airport gets a new name

It's not only the White House where there's been a change of political party: Las Vegas's airport is about to drop the name of a long-ago Republican senator, Pat McCarran and take on the name of Democratic former Senate Majority Leader Harrry Reid.

The Clark County Commission, which operates the airport, voted unanimously to direct its staff to file the name change with the Federal Aviation Administration, which must give a formal OK. The new name will be Harry Reid International Airport.

Reid served in the Senate from 1987 to 2017. McCarran, who was Senator from 1933 to 1954, and is best remembered as author of the McCarran Act, a cold-war measure that, among other things, authorized concentration camps in the U.S. He was also noted for anti-immigrant and anti-semitic statements.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
