L.A. "bird strike" shuts down LAX operations

A bird hit a high-voltage power line near LAX yesterday, causing a 10-second power surge to all terminals. No big deal? Think again. The surge caused protective circuits to shut down conveyor belts, escalators and all kinds of other terminal equipment. Manual resets by technicians were needed to restart the systems. DETAILS
