June 18, 2019: Lamego, Portugal

While sailing with Viking River Cruises along the Douro River in Portugal, I was able to explore Lamego, a lovely city nestled among the terraced slopes of the Douro valley port wine-growing region.

The most visited attraction in the city is the sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of Remedies, built in 1750, which stands gracefully above the town. Its hundreds of zigzagging stairs are decorated with tiled friezes.

The church rises at one end of the main thoroughfare and at the other is the 18th century Episcopal palace now housing the town's museum. Many priceless treasures are housed here including important work by the Portuguese master Vasco Fernandes (Grão Vasco).

Also along this main street is Lamego Cathedral. Built in the 12th century by the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, it was in this town that his ascension to the throne was announced.

Guests meandering along this street will find many art deco touches as well as sidewalk cafes and several locally-owned shops selling Portugal’s famous cork products and other worthy souvenirs.
