June 16, 2017: Castillo de las Coloradas/Águila, Lanzarote, Canary Islands

About the only historic building of note on Lanzarote is the 18th century Castillo de las Coloradas/Torre del Águila, located just east of the Marina Rubicon. Reminiscent of the Martello Towers found around the British Isles, the tower was built to defend the island from pirate attack. This is also the spot where Jean de Bethencourt setup base when he began the conquest of the Canary Islands in 1402.
