Grim summer for British vacationers?

This may be the great stay-at-home summer for UK travelers as obstacles pile up for travel to popular European and other summer destinations. The outlook is daunting enough that a newspaper survey found that a large majority of its readers are writing off foreign travel to next year.

As Britain's lockdown continues, and re-opening measures start with considerable uncertainty, the country's two biggest holiday companies, Tui and Jet2 Holidays, have notified customers that all holidays booked for earlier than July 1st are cancelled, and the cancellations may roll on after that, especially as not all the usual destinations in Spain, France, Morocco, Greece and more will be open to outside travelers.

And, to make matters even more in favor of staycation or domestic travel, the Government has announced that as internal restrictions are lifted there will be a two-week quarantine requirement for anyone entering the UK—including UK residents returning from vacations abroad.

So far, complaints from airlines and the travel industry have produced no change on that plan. That may be one of the reasons why so many readers of The Independent have shelved their plans for next year—but they did tell the paper they plan to travel in even greater numbers in 2021.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
