Germany's €49 fare hits a delay

Germany's plan for a low-cost monthly local-and-regional transit ticket to follow up last summer's €9 deal has stalled in its tracks, and officials can't yet say when it will be on sale. The original date was set for January 1.

Hopes earlier for a new ticket by early fall were dashed by long-running negotiations about what the ticket should cover and how it would be funded, since the plan requires contributions by the federal and state governments and participation by local transit operators. Agreement was eventually reached on those issues, and the price was set at €49 a month, with the ticket valid on all local and regional transit across the country.

However, the Transport Ministry has now said that there are "a number of open points" that must be solved and that it is now more likely to start in May rather than the current April target.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
