The site of a Viking fortress from a thousand years ago will soon be home to a Viking fortress again, as Trelleborg, Denmark builds what will confusingly be called Ny Trelleborg, or New Trelleborg.
Permission was needed for local authorities to build a replica fortress on top of the archaeological site of the original, built to fend off attacks by other Vikings. The original, like most of its type, was probably used for only a few years, but the replica will be a permanent attraction and learning site.
The city council has approved funding for the project, which includes rebuilding the fortress walls and roof, as well as gateworks and defense structures, including high wooden walls and a moat. In the end, it will look like the Trelleborg of 981. The modern town already has a reconstructed longhouse and an annual Viking festival.
