Coimbra about to give itself a lift

Coimbra, Portugal's university city, is definitely on the hilly side, with large parts of the city along the river that flows through it, but with the university on a steep hill above it.

As part of plans to upgrade its local transit system with new lines and equipment, the municipality is looking for bids on an elevator to short-cut the 125 steps of its Monumental Stairs, a historic landmark and a barrier to many. The proposal would put an elevator tower to the right of the stairs, linked to a walkway to the upper level.

Other parts of the transit include more tram and bus lines, including one that will link its slightly-out-of-town mainline rail station with a number of in-town  destinations by reopening a section of track closed since the 1990s.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
