China Beats Out Japan for Indonesian Rail Project

A joint venture between China Railway International and a consortium of Indonesian state companies won the $5.5 billion contract to build Southeast Asia's first high speed railway. It will go from the Indonesian capital of Jakarta to the city of Bandung. The rail line cover eight stations along the 100 mile route at speeds of 150 miles an hour.  Construction is set to start next year and the line is to begin operating in 2019. 

 

Japan was upset at the chaotic bidding process for the railway and Indonesia's eventual pick of China to carry out the construction.
