Fighting a local anti-nudity ordinance in a town north of Barcelona, the Catalan Naturist Club, having lost its appeals all the way to Spain's highest court, is now appealing to the European Human Rights Court at Strasbourg.
The Spanish high court ruled that while Spain's constitution guarantees free expression of belief, "the personal attitude that is consistent with those who go nude in public spaces such as beaches is not an expression of the fundamental right to ideological freedom."
Castell-Platja d'Aro, about 50 miles from Barcelona, is only one of many towns (including Barcelona) that have banned beach nudity, although many have set aside nude beaches away from the rest. The club's argument is that the town offered one that's too far away and too hard to get to. The case could have a significant effect elsewhere; there are other towns, including Cadiz and Valladolid, where bans are still in court. The Guardian (UK) has more DETAILS
