Austria coffee-drinkers in for a chill?

Austria's cafes, which are required to put their outdoor tables away every winter may soon be allowed to drag them out before April rolls around next year. Austria is considering new rules that would allow year-round "Schanigartens," seating areas outside bars, cafes and restaurants.

The Chamber of Commerce surveyed 7000 food businesses in Vienna and found that 60% would like to put tables out in winter when it's warm enough. Chamber President Walter Ruck told the Kurier newspaper: “In February there were a few mild days. Many guests would have liked to eat in a Schanigarten but were not able to. Now in April the law allows them to but it is often too rainy and cold.”

Options being considered range from full opening year-round, which would likely involve heavy use of outdoor heaters, to having just a few tables allowed. A decision is expected by late may. For more info from TheLocal.at, click HERE
