American adds Cancun flights from more cities

American Airlines will be flying to Mexico's Cancun vacation mecca from more cities this spring, adding non-stops from Kansas City, Raleigh-Durham, Pittsburgh and Nashville.

All four of the cities will be served by a Saturday round-trip, leaving for Mexico in the morning, and bringing return passengers home later in the day. The service is billed as seasonal, starting in March, but no end date has been announced. Kansas City's flight will use a 737; the other routes will be flown on A319s.

The flights are designed to tap into local markets around the four cities; none is a hub where AA is bringing in passengers from all over. Pittsburgh was once USAir's main hub, but that ended long before the merger with American; Raleigh-Durham is a former AA hub. Pending approvals, tickets will go on sale in November.

Three of the routes will put American in direct competition with Delta, which also has seasonal Saturday service from all except Kansas City. For more from USA Today, click HERE
