Airbnb to Ireland: We'll help, but...

Airbnb, which has come under criticism in Ireland as one of the causes of the country's tight housing market, says it wants to ban illegal hosts, but needs government help to know who they are.

Amanda Cupples, Airbnb's manager for Northern Europe, says the government needs to create  register of legal and approved short-term lets, and Airbnb will then reject any listing not on the register. Otherwise, the company says, it has no way to eliminate illegal lets.

Ireland implemented housing regulations in 2019 designed to cut down on landlords focusing on the less-regulated and more profitable short-term market, using planning permissions and time limits as tool, but it did not create a central register, as some other places, including Paris, have done.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
