Over the years, I and other Gumbo writers have posted many pictures of colorful food in markets all over the world, but these two stick in my mind because their vivid color is inside as well as out.

The blood orange, the deepest-colored one I’ve ever seen, was in an open-air market in Catania, Sicily; the startling pêche de vigne or ‘grapevine peach’ is from Vernon, France, and featured in a previous Picture of the Day.
