Rand McNally maps out new features

In the age of the Internet and GPS, there are still some old-fashioned institutions that keep on going—and next year is significant for some of them, including the 100th anniversary of Route 66, the 102nd anniversary of the Rand McNally Road Atlas and the Semiguincentennial of the United States.*

Working hard to stay relevant in the age of Google Maps, Rand McNally has added a bunch of new features to its paper map books. Among them are two features dedicated to food: Eleven culinary road trips that explore the diverse regional cuisines of the U.S. and Chef’s Day Off, with recommendations by local chefs in a number of cities.

And, for those who love to leave the beaten path, Rand McNally has been working with Atlas Obscura to add offbeat options. Atlas Obscura’s director said “We’re honored to share our passion for uncovering hidden gems and unexpected stories, especially along the iconic Route 66. This atlas is a celebration of the unique places and flavors that make America so fascinating.”

The books come in three varieties (the classic Road Atlas, the Large Scale Road Atlas, and the Midsize Easy to Read Road Atlas)
