Rainbow Falls is a lovely waterfall situated on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, near Mammoth Lakes. The area is known for its volcanic rock formations, including those in Devil’s Postpile National Monument.
The waterfall plunges about 100 feet (31 m) as the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River descends over the precipice. The name of the waterfall derives from the sun hitting the mist of the falls, although there were no rainbows visible on the day we hiked there.
Below is a nice photo showing the river beneath the falls.
