Pre-clearance for U.S. border and customs, familiar to air passengers from Canada, Ireland and a few other places, is now running on rails at Vancouver’s Pacific Central Station, the first non-airport location for the program.
Passengers traveling from Vancouver to U.S. destinations on the Amtrak Cascades service are now being fully-cleared at Vancouver, and the train will no longer stop just inside the U.S. border to take on immigration agents who sometimes check passenger credentials before letting the train continue.
Travelers heading in the opposite direction go through Canadian immigration and customs on arrival at Vancouver.
