Pope Leo XIV will be in Barcelona June 10 for a mass on the 100th anniversary of the death of Antoni Gaudi, architect of the nearing-completion Sagrada Familia basilica. Gaudi was declared ‘venerable’ by the Catholic church last year, a step toward being named a saint.
The event also marks the dedication of the church’s last and tallest tower, dedicated to Jesus.
If you think you’ve ever had a hectic itinerary in your travels, by the way, the Pope is offering some competition. He will be in Spain from June 6th to 12th, starting with a meeting in Madrid with King Felipe VI in Madrid, followed the next day by a massive outdoor mass in the city center.
On the 8th, it’s a meeting with the Prime Minister and another mass at Real Madrid’s soccer stadium. The next day, it’s on to Barcelona and a prayer vigil at the Olympic Stadium, the day before the Sagrada Familia mass.
After Barcelona, visits to Tenerife and Gran Canaria in Spain’s Canary Islands. Altogether, the itinerary includes four cities and 22 speeches and masses.
