Poet’s path: new walking route honors Wordsworth

A new 14-mile walking route, pieced together from bits of existing footpaths, has been dedicated in honor of William Wordsworth, the Romantic poet whose words have inspired many to visit and walk England’s Lake District.

The sign-posted path runs from Ullswater through the hills and along the lakes and tarns to the town of Ambleside.

Creating the route was a joint work of Friends of the Ullswater Way, Wordsworth Grasmere and the University of Cumbria. The region is the cradle of the Romantic literature movement in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, including not only Wordsworth but also Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey.

The route follows Wordsworth’s “plain living and high thinking” philosophy by connecting places linked to his verses and his personal history, as well as those of his friends and family.
