Petrified Forest Park, Lesvos, Greece

What distinguishes this site from many other places where you can view petrified trees is the sheer size of the park and the quality/nature of the specimens.

Due to the particular way the trees here were silicified – by being covered with pyroclastic material from volcanic eruptions – quite a few are in an upright position and some were preserved with their root systems intact.

The trees belong to many different species, including the ancestors of today’s sequoias.

The park is large and we spent over two hours walking around it and admiring the many dozens of specimens on display.

There is an associated museum in nearby Sigri, which provides a lot of interesting information about the geological history of the area and the formation of the petrified forest. There are additional good examples of petrified tree trunks here.

On the outskirts of the village, a short distance from the museum, is another small area where petrified trees are exhibited in situ and along the shoreline you come across large trunks that are completely submerged.
