Paris may extend Seine swim season

Swimming in the Seine has proven so popular, especially with extended high temperatures, that the city is considering extending the season, which was supposed to end August 31st. It’s the first time since 1923 swimming in the river has been permitted.

Over 75,000 people have taken to the three bathing areas since they opened July 5, despite 13 days when swimming had to be closed because of water quality issues.

However, there are a number of issues that must be resolved before an extension, including whether lifeguards will be available, and whether the city can negotiate more changes in boat schedules on the river to avoid interfering with the roped-off swimming areas. Deputy Mayor for Sports Pierre Rabadan told Le Parisien “For now, yes, the closure is scheduled for August 31st. But we’ll see. There are several factors to consider, primarily economic, because even though it’s free for people to swim, it’s not free for the city.”
