This year it’s not just airfares, baggage fees and fuel surcharges that are going up; in Rome, it’s getting more expensive to see the sights.
With a new fee of €2 to get close enough to the Trevi Fountain to toss a coin and proposals to fence off other popular outdoor sights including the Spanish Steps, it should come as no surprise that there’s a price increase in the offing for the Pantheon.
The price for the Roman temple that is now a Catholic church will rise €2 to €7 on July 1. Until last July, it had gotten by without a fee for nearly 2,000 years. The paid entry fees are split between the Ministry of Culture and the Diocese of Rome.
The ministry says the government’s share will go to the Piano Olivetti per la Cultura, a state programme focused on supporting community libraries in disadvantaged areas across Italy.
