Panoramic Overview of the Fes Medina

There’s nothing quite like exploring Fes (Fez).  It’s a world you’re almost certain to get lost in unless you have an experienced guide to show you the way.  More on that in the future.

01 Fes Medina overview

Fes was founded in the 8-9th centuries, making it the oldest surviving city in Morocco.  It reached its zenith in the 13th–14th centuries when it replaced Marrakesh as the capitol of the kingdom.  It remained the capitol until the French chose Rabat to replace it in 1912.  Fes is still considered the cultural heart of the country.  It’s Morocco’s second largest city and is one of the largest and oldest urban car-free zones on the planet.

Before our group began exploring the Medina (old city) of Fes, we went to hill that provided an overview.  Quite impressive!  If the Medina looks crowded, well it is.  Fes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, filled with many fascinating and historic sites.

It is so claustrophobic! Without a guide, it is so easy to get lost. But it is fascinating and certainly a must-see in #Morocco!
