Oxford is the county town of England’s Oxfordshire and is of course famous worldwide for its prestigious university, the oldest in the English-speaking world. The ‘dreaming spires’ description above was penned by Victorian poet Matthew Arnold, when he gazed at the stunning architecture of the university buildings.
Oxford enjoys the confluence of two rivers, the Cherwell and the Isis, the latter being the name given to the section of the River Thames that flows through Oxford. The rivers are featured in these photos.
For more than 800 years, Oxford has been home to royalty and scholars, and since the 9th century an established town, although people are known to have lived in the area for millennia. Nowadays, the city is a bustling cosmopolitan town still dominated by its ancient university, but home also to a growing hi-tech community.
