Oslo plans big-scale driverless-bus test

Oslo is planning a full-scale, open-to-passengers center-city test of a driverless bus system for next year. The city will use 10 to 20 of the vehicles, like the one above, pictured in a previous demonstration.

An app will be issued that allows riders to summon the buses, within a defined zone, and the actual route will be determined by passenger calls. It’s expected that, within the zone, it should take no more than 5 or 10 minutes for a bus to arrive.

The test is expected to start in March, with a law change needed to permit the driverless operation. While the test will be conducted in a central area, the aim is to gather enough data to deploy the autonomous fleet in some of the capital’s less-dense zones on a permanent basis.
