Although there’s no policy yet in place, the Washington Post has reported that TSA agents at airport screening have started asking to see your lunch come out of your carry-on at the scanner.
The Post and other papers have received reports from travelers, some of them quite peeved, that they’ve been asked to remove the food they brought from home or bought at the airport before security, and put it through the scanner separately.
Apparently, food often emits organic compounds that can be mistaken for the ones given off by explosives; a false positive at the gate can hold up hundreds behind while the food undergoes close scrutiny. Checkpoint agents have told some travelers that they expect it to become policy soon. That could come on top of regulations phasing in now that require electronics that are smaller than a laptop but bigger than a phone to be pulled out for separate scanning.
Could be a fun summer at the airport!
