The Norwegian government has back-tracked on its plan to cut postal deliveries to once a week in the face of wide opposition. The mail was already down to every other day, and neighboring Denmark has stopped postal delivery altogether.
Letter mail is a declining phenomenon world-wide, and many countries have limited deliveries or raised prices sharply to avoid huge losses on a service that everyone wants but no one seems to use.
Norway’s leaders say they will now try to find ways to reduce the costs without cutting service frequency, including by better coordination. The minister responsible told the state broadcasting system that “Instead of having different resources distributing mail, such as parcels, letters, and newspapers, we can coordinate it and achieve significant savings for the state, and thus the community.”
